New National Business Names Registration System

A new National Business Names Registration System is expected to commence in May 2012 and will replace the current state and territory registers.

Once the system has commenced, all business name registrations will be managed by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Until the National Business Names Registration System commences, continue referring to the state or territory information below for business name registrations.

Australian Capital Territory

• Refer to the ACT Office of Regulatory Services  website or phone (02) 6207 3000 for further information. A registration fee will apply.

New South Wales

• Download an application form (PDF, 0.46MB)  and register your business name over the counter at a Fair Trading Centre . A registration fee will apply. Refer to the NSW Fair Trading  website or phone 13 32 20 for further information. In NSW you will need to renew your business name every 3 years.

Northern Territory

• Complete the online business registration form , or phone 1800 193 111 for further information. In NT you will need to renew your business name every three years.

Queensland

• Download the Application for registration of a business name (PDF, 0.49MB)  form on the Queensland Office of Fair Trading  website or phone a fair trading customer service representative on 13 13 04 for further information. You can register your business name for either one or three years.

South Australia

• Download an Application for Registration of a Business Name (PDF, 0.1MB)  on the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs  website and lodge either by mail, fax or in person. A registration fee is applicable. For further information, phone 1300 138 918.

Tasmania

• Download an application form  from the Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading  website and lodge it at any Service Tasmania shop . An application fee is applicable, and you will need to renew your business name every 3 years. For further information, phone 1300 654 499.

Victoria

• You can register your business name  online, on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website or phone 1300 361 673 for further information. You can also renew your business name  online. Check the Victorian Names Register  to see whether another business has already registered a name similar to the name you want.

Western Australia

• Register your business name on the Department of Commerce's Business names  website. A registration fee is applicable. You will need to renew your business name every three years. Phone 1300 304 014 for more information.
