The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has responsibilities under the federal Privacy Act 1988. The Privacy Act provides protection for personal information that is handled by Australian Government and Australian Capital Territory government agencies; personal tax file numbers used by individuals and organisations; and information about your credit worthiness held by credit reporting agencies and credit providers. The Privacy Act also covers all businesses with a turnover over $3 million, all health service providers regardless of turnover and some other small businesses including those trading in personal information.
