Being able to claim that your business is environmentally friendly or that it produces environmentally friendly products can be one way to help you stand out from the crowd. But care is needed to ensure that what you claim is not false or misleading for your customers.

To help you understand your obligations on claims about greener plastic bags, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recently published a guide, Biodegradable, degradable and recyclable claims on plastic bags: News for business which includes information on topics such as:

  • your obligations under the Trade Practices Act 1974
  • how to make environmentally friendly, biodegradable and degradable claims, and recyclable claims
  • standards.
