On 1 January 2011 the national Australian Consumer Law (ACL) comes into effect. The ACL will replace existing national, state and territory consumer laws. As a small business, it's important that you understand your responsibilities under the new law.

The ACL identifies business obligations and consumer rights across all business sectors, covering:

  • standards of business conduct
  • harmful business practices
  • the regulation of specific types of business-to-consumer transactions
  • basic consumer rights for goods and services
  • the regulation of consumer product safety.

A website has been launched to help businesses and consumers understand their rights and obligations under the new law. For more information, visit consumerlaw.gov.au .
