Register for an Australian Business Number (ABN)

Do I need an ABN?

An Australian Business Number (ABN) is not compulsory, but it does allow you to:

  • facilitate a single Business Activity Statement (BAS)
  • confirm your business identity to others when ordering and invoicing
  • avoid Pay as You Go (PAYG) tax on payments you receive
  • claim Goods and Services Tax (GST) credits
  • claim energy grants credits
  • obtain an Australian domain name.

How do I register for an ABN?

Registering for an ABN is free.

Registering an ABN is a separate process to registering a business name. To register for an ABN online, visit the Australian Business Register website.

For further assistance, contact the Australian Taxation Office on 13 28 66.

Register an ABN

Do I need to register an ABN and a business name separately?

ABN registration is administered by the Australian Taxation Office. This registration only provides you with an ABN – it does not automatically register your business name.

Business names are administered by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. Visit our register your business name page for more information.

I want to register a company. Do I apply for an Australian Company Number (ACN) or an ABN first?

You will need to register your ACN first, then your ABN.

For information on applying for an ACN and to download an application form, visit the How to register a company page on the Australian Securities and Investments Commission website.

To register for an ABN online, visit the Australian Business Register website.

My business details have changed. Who do I need to inform?

You must inform the Australian Taxation Office about any changes to your ABN registration details. Please note that when you change your business structure you are also required to register a new ABN.

For information on how to update your ABN details, visit the Update your registration details page on the ATO website.

When you make changes to your business, you may also need to change your business name details. To do this, you must inform the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

How do I cancel my ABN?

Visit the Cancel ABN page on the Australian Taxation Office website or contact the Australian Taxation Office on 13 28 66.
