In advance of the establishment of the CRC for Developing Northern Australia, the Government is calling for applications for short term collaborative research projects that will lead to direct impacts and improve the competitiveness of industries in northern Australia.

Overview

The CRC for Developing Northern Australia Project Funding Round supports short term industry-led research collaborations to develop important new technologies, products and services which address industry problems in northern Australia in the areas of:

  • tropical health and medicine, including models of care; and
  • tropical and northern agriculture including animal and plant improvement and sustainability.

Projects will deliver tangible outcomes for northern Australia.

The CRC for Developing Northern Australia Project Funding Round will kickstart the important work of the CRC for Developing Northern Australia.

The funding round will be administered by AusIndustry within the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science in accordance with the CRC Programme Guidelines.

What support or funding is available?

Up to $3 million over three years is available for each project supported under the CRC for Developing Northern Australia Project Funding Round.

The project collaboration must at least match the amount of grant funding sought through cash and/or in-kind contributions. In-kind contributions means non-cash resources provided by a participant to conduct the activities of the project. They may be staff or non-staff resources.

You can use the funding to support the costs of:

  • research
  • salaries
  • student placements
  • commercialisation
  • capital items, such as equipment

You cannot use funding for the same activities or project previously or currently financed through any other funding scheme.

Projects supported under the CRC for Developing Northern Australia Project Funding Round will receive funding for a single, specified term to undertake the project in the Funding Agreement..

Who can apply?

Collaborations from industry, research and community sectors can apply.

A lead participant (that is an industry entity) must submit the application.

You do not need to be be located in northern Australia to be eligible to apply, but projects must be able to demonstrate how project outcomes will directly benefit northern Australia.

What are the eligibility criteria?

Projects funded under the CRC for Developing Northern Australia Project Funding Round must have at least:

  • two Australian industry organisations including at least one small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) and
  • one Australian research organisation

Additionally, projects must be undertaking research in one or both of the following research themes:

  • tropical health and medicine, including models of care
  • tropical and northern agriculture including animals and plant improvement and sustainability

What are the merit criteria?

Applications for the CRC for Developing Northern Australia Project Funding Round will be assessed through a competitive, merit based process. Applications must demonstrate how their project will deliver tangible outcomes for northern Australia.

The selection criteria are:

  1. The expected industry outcomes
  2. The proposed research activities or project
  3. Demonstrated governnance and management capability
  4. The proposed eductation and/or training programme
  5. Value for money
  6. Expected national benefits

Selection criteria weightings:

  • a) and b) - 30%% each
  • c), d), e) and f) - 10% each.

The agreed authorised representative must complete the application form.

You must identify an appropriate contact person that we can talk to in relation to your application.

How will I know if I am successful?

If you are successful you will receive a letter of offer setting out funding details and any conditions you must address before entering a formal agreement. You wll need to:

  • Accept the offer
  • Enter into negotiations with the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science to finalise the funding agreement.

Unsuccesful applicants will be notified in writing and may receive feedback on their applications.

How will payments be made?

Scheduled payments are made quarterly and are subject to the completion of and compliance with a:

  • Commonwealth funding agreement
  • Participant agreements
  • Quarterly report
