Defence tenders

All Defence tenders are published on the AusTender website, including opportunities for standing offers and procurement panels. A standing offer is an agreement to supply specified goods and services for a specified period, including a basis for pricing.

AusTender is also a useful market research tool. It contains the Defence Annual Procurement Plan, which lists planned Defence procurements over $1 million, and information about previously awarded contracts.

Supply chains

Defence procures most of its large-scale and technical capabilities through global defence companies, known as prime contractors. Primes rely on their extensive domestic and international supply chains to build, deliver and sustain Defence assets.

Most opportunities for Australian companies are in the domestic supply chains of major defence contractors, such as the prime contractors and their suppliers. There are many tiers in a domestic supply chain, creating a network of subcontractors and their associated supply chains.

Who to talk to

CDIC business advisers and defence facilitators can help you navigate the defence industry and identify opportunities to work directly with Defence or in the supply chains of defence projects.

Australian Industry Capability plans

You can find opportunities in the public Australian Industry Capability (AIC) plans of prime contractors.

When a company competes for a large Defence contract it is required to identify potential Australian suppliers in its supply chain. If successful, the company becomes the prime contractor and publishes a public AIC plan that:

  • forecasts opportunities for Australian industry involvement in its project
  • provides a point of contact to discuss business opportunities associated with the Defence contract

Industry Capability Network

The Industry Capability Network (ICN) Gateway is an online database where:

  • businesses can promote their capabilities
  • project owners can search for suppliers or call for expressions of interest

Prime contractors on major Defence projects, such as the Hunter Class Frigate Program, use the ICN Gateway to outline their needs and develop their supply chains

If your business is defence-ready and you’re looking to supply to major Defence projects, you can register on the ICN Gateway.

Indigenous businesses

Defence encourages Indigenous businesses to apply for contracting opportunities.

There are state and national industry events specifically for Indigenous businesses. These are regularly attended by defence businesses looking to build connections with Indigenous businesses.
