The CDIC provides a national network of business advisers with regional and operational expertise to assist Australian businesses develop their ability to work with Defence.

Advisory and facilitation services are targeted at defence sector SMEs and eligibility requirements apply.

General enquiries

The CDIC will provide advice over the phone or onsite. Based on the capability of the business, this advice may include:

  • guidance on the defence market and working in the defence sector
  • local and international prime contractors and what it takes to supply to them
  • potential opportunities for broader engagement with the defence sector
  • exporting and international supply chain opportunities
  • how the CDIC and/or other Government agencies can assist your business.

Advisory and Facilitation Services

The CDIC Advisory and Facilitation services will help SMEs improve their business capabilities and help them take advantage of development opportunities within the defence sector. They are targeted at SMEs in the defence sector and eligibility requirements apply.

Our business advisers have extensive defence and private sector experience across business management, skills development, innovation collaboration, export activities and supply chain facilitation and can provide advice on:

  • Business Improvement - to identify areas for your business to become a more competitive supplier to the defence industry and to identify and take advantage of growth opportunities in defence and adjacent markets.
  • Skills Development - to identify the support needed to upskill your workforce aligned with the capability requirements of defence and to become a more productive and globally competitive business.
  • Export and Supply Chain support - to identify new or additional defence export markets and supply chain opportunities. This could include working with you to become export ready, participate in trade events overseas, and/or facilitate connections to new and/or existing defence supply chains domestically and globally.
  • Supplier Continuous Improvement Program (SCIP) - to benchmark performance, embed sustainable continuous improvement and facilitate improved supply chain (customer/supplier) relationships within the defence industry.
  • Defence Market Preparedness - to assist those newcomers to the defence sector with guidance and advice regarding what it takes to supply the defence sector.

Capability Improvement Grants

As part of an advisory or facilitation service your business adviser may make specific business capability improvement recommendations. If this is the case you will be invited to apply for a Capability Improvement Grant.

A Capability Improvement Grant will reimburse you for up to half the cost of engaging a consultant or expert to implement the eligible recommendations provided in the advisory or facilitation service report. This may include undertaking skills development training.

The CDIC will provide up to $3 million in Capability Improvement Grants each year. The exact amount of funding available in any year will take into account advice from the CDIC Advisory Board.

Approved grants

Our grants are published according to Commonwealth Grants Rules and Guidelines, as part of the list of Department of Defence funded grants on the Department of Defence website. The list details the recipient and what the funding will be used for.

Assistance with Innovation Proposals

The CDIC hosts the Defence Innovation Portal, the primary gateway for companies, universities, start-ups and publicly-funded research agencies seeking to submit innovation proposals or ideas to the Defence Innovation Hub and Next Generation Technologies Fund. Before submitting your proposal to the Defence Innovation Hub for assessment, advisers can help you:

CDIC advisers also provide a broader range of innovation advice, including:

  • for businesses that are successful in gaining Defence innovation funding, specialist defence business and commercialisation advice, and possible diversification opportunities in adjacent industry sectors
  • facilitating connections to other businesses and potential markets via other AusIndustry programs (e.g. the Entrepreneurs’ Programme and Industry Growth Centres)
  • facilitating access to international innovation programs, including those in the US and UK.
