2 modern style alloy wheels with thin rubber tyres and disc shaped motors attached behind each hub. There is also a small handheld remote control.

The Smart Wheels are in their final phase of development and likely to set a new standard for electric golf buggies globally.

Concourse Golf's Smart Wheel technology now helps golfers worldwide, but the applications in other sectors are endless

Ingenious design has always been at the heart of Concourse Golf Pty Ltd (Concourse Golf) and the Smart Wheel is the natural progression for Concourse Golf from their initial research and development success stories – the award-winning CBM2 pull buggy and CBM3 push buggies. These buggies both broke conventions with the ability to fold flat alongside the golf bag while still remaining attached. They are category leading examples of innovative compact engineering and effortless usability.

The Concourse Smart Wheels are the world’s first self-propelled electric wheels that communicate with each other wirelessly delivering controlled powered mobility with incredible versatility. This innovation by Concourse Golf has pioneered a game changing experience for golfers, enabling them to simply replace the wheels of their existing push buggy transforming it into an advanced, remote control electric powered buggy in seconds.

Each Smart Wheel is an engineering masterpiece containing a complete drive system. Discreetly located inside each hub are brushless motors, lithium batteries, sensors, processors and gyroscopes. The proprietary technology platform enables the wheels to communicate via Bluetooth remote to deliver effortless speed control and precision steering. The possibilities are vast for the Smart Wheels as they can be easily attached to just about any wheeled device providing instant remote controlled power.

Since launching the Smart Wheels, Concourse Golf have:

  • won “Best in Class” in the Product Design category of the 2018 Good Design Awards presented at the Sydney Opera House
  • been featured nationally in the Channel 10 series – Australia by Design, on the Fox Sports Golf Show, Golf Digest TV
  • recently been recognised on a global stage winning a coveted European 2019 iF Design Award
Everything we do is focused on delivering the best possible experience for the walking golfer – both on and off the course. For our Smart Wheels this means combining engineering, design and advanced technology to deliver a highly reliable, space efficient and easy to use product.

David MacKay, CEO and founder of Concourse Golf

An Accelerating Commercialisation grant of $349,962 awarded in April 2016 helped finance the Smart Wheel prototype and pre-production. Commercialisation Adviser John Grew helped identify design and manufacturing options within Australia.

The second production run in Australia of Concourse Smart Wheels is nearing completion and the first international distributor order is ready to go to Europe.

David MacKay said with the support of the Australian Government Entrepreneurs’ Programme, and more specifically the Accelerating Commercialisation element, Australian entrepreneurs have a real opportunity to reach full global potential with lasting benefits for all Australians.

With faster commercialisation, meaningful business introductions, and financial support, Australian innovations, like the Concourse Smart Wheel, are able to develop product and commence production on-shore.

This not only creates jobs, it also highlights brilliant Australian innovation to the rest of the world.

The Accelerating Commercialisation grant has been enormously helpful. The rigour around the application process helped us clarify our vision, and proceeding successfully through the highly regarded program brought us real credibility. This formal recognition from the Australian Government has really helped open doors.

The walking golf market is big with as many as half of the world’s 60 million players taking the option to get some exercise when they play rather than drive a cart.

Now in their 2nd production run with a national distribution network established, the business is on course to conquer the world with their game changing approach to golf establishing further sales and distribution in 6 countries and targeting a further 10 this year.

Interestingly, the commercialisation potential for Concourse Smart Wheels is not limited to golf.

More than a break-through development in category, the Smart Wheels concept effectively ‘reinvents the wheel’ with enormous potential for applications in healthcare, transportation and travel, logistics, and wherever mobility solutions may be needed.

“We have no doubt that our Smart Wheels will have opportunities in other markets as the relatively complex requirements for golf provides a good platform. We are now happy to commence discussions with other industries that could benefit from our technology,” David says.

The financial assistance has enabled us to speed up the development schedule, and the support provided by our dedicated Commercialisation Adviser John Grew has been first class. The breadth of advice and the introductions gained from John have been invaluable.
