Artemis Robotics is now the vehicle that Whitsunday Moorings will use to drive forward marine construction


Whitsunday Moorings and Marine Construction Pty Ltd (WMMC) deal with all things marine building and maintenance. The business specialises in wet welding, ultrathermic cutting, installation of Helix screw moorings and Seaflex systems, as well as jetty and marine construction, EPA clearance reports, prop scrubs and sea chest clearing, leak identification, hull inspections, salvage and seabed clearance after capital works.

‘Artemis’ designed and developed by WMMC is a world-first testing and evaluation system to inspect steel, concrete, timber and fibreglass/composite structures in the marine industry. 


The R&D Tax Incentive was vital to WMMC during this stage. We sought an Overseas Finding from AusIndustry, which provided some certainty for WMMC to undertake the research project and allowed us to receive a tax offset against some of the costs.

WMMC's Artemis Pile Scanning Robot (Artemis PSR) technology is a mechatronic / robotic platform with scanning technology to test the condition of marine structures.

WMMC's non-destructive testing uses contemporary microwave devices and techniques for an accurate imaging inspection of surface and buried interior defects. Artemis has applications for a range of industries, including non-marine construction, moving and fixed assets and has potential defence applications.

  • Artemis was developed in collaboration with the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland, to test the condition of submerged and exposed cylindrical wharf piles.
  • WMMC is a fully qualified commercial diving company with divers, dive supervisors, diver attendants and Master 5 skippers.

How the Government has helped

The Entrepreneurs' Programme has helped the business address a number of challenges. Specifically, the Innovation Connections project has helped WMMC to develop the next iteration of scanning technology, from 2D (laser) to 3D (penetrating radiation) – greatly enhancing the testing system's capabilities.

"The business evaluation was really helpful in identifying the next steps for the company. We were able to bounce ideas off Neil, and benefit from his expertise and networks.

Even without a detailed grasp of the technology he understood where we were at with our advanced developments and took the opportunity to reconnect us with UQ and Dr Yifan Wang and assisted us to begin scoping the project.
