Insurance and the Goods & Services Tax (GST)

If you're registered for GST, you may be able to claim GST credits for the GST component of your insurance premium. These credits can be used to avoid paying GST on some kinds of insurance.

You can't claim a GST credit for some types of insurance related to residential properties or financial supplies though, such as loans.

There are two ways to claim GST credit:

  • You can tell your insurer how much of the insurance premium is for business purposes. The insurer can then avoid charging you GST.
  • You can pay the GST component on your insurance and then claim a refund for it from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Visit the ATO website for more information on whether you can claim GST credits for insurance.

What to do...

  • Contact the ATO for help with GST.
  • Contact your insurer to discuss your insurance and GST.
