Courses and qualifications

There are many formal courses and qualifications that can help you or your employees develop the skills you need in your business.

Before you enrol in a course, make sure it’s being delivered by a registered training organisation (RTO). RTOs must meet nationally recognised standards of quality and deliver nationally recognised training. There are around 5,000 RTOs in Australia, all offering different types of training.

You can search the MySkills website for:

  • tools to help you compare courses and training providers - so you can ensure you're sending your employees on the course most suited to your needs
  • nationally recognised training courses specific to your industry, in your state or territory
  • a VET FEE-HELP calculator - to help you and your employee(s) understand loan obligations if you're using financial assistance for the training career pathways information
  • information on student outcomes for the most popular courses - to see how courses can relate to occupations in a career stream
  • registered training organisations or training providers in a location near you.

Your relevant Industry Reference Committee, supported by their Skills Service Organisation, can also help you work out the most appropriate courses and qualifications for your industry.

Training workshops and events

There are many free and low cost workshops, events and seminars provided by all levels of government, including local councils. Search our Events for one near you.

Mentoring

Mentoring can be an effective way to develop your skills and your employees' skills at little or no cost.

Mentoring can be performed informally between two co-workers with different levels of experience. It's a great way to support productive relationships in the workplace and to encourage your more experienced employees to develop supervisor skills.

You can also use mentoring to learn new skills from successful business people. You can find a mentor yourself through your networks, or use mentoring services for business. You can also search our Grants and Assistance for government funded mentoring programmes in your area.

On the job training

On the job training is any training that takes place in your workplace. It can include training from a supervisor or another employee. You can use existing workplace skills and knowledge to educate your employees on different areas of your business.
