The release of the draft legislation follows IP Australia’s earlier consultation on Implementing accepted recommendations from ACIP’s Review of the Designs System.

The draft legislation aims to deliver early benefits to designers including a 12-month grace period as a safety net for designers and simplified design registration process.

In addition, as part of our ongoing program of designs reform IP Australia have recently concluded a year-long review, researching the Australian design economy and the role of design rights. This includes a series of research reports that are now available online. IP Australia have also released a Information Pack which summarises key findings and outlines our next steps for designs reform.

These include progressing a suite of initiatives focused on removing accessibility barriers in designs and giving Australian businesses who engage in design better access to the tools and information they need, while also exploring and preparing for further policy and legislative reforms.
